Harbwr Cabin
Sustainable, efficient, eco-friendly living space.
The Brief: Crafting Harbwr Cabin
For the Harbwr Cabin project, Makers Mark Joinery was tasked with creating a simple and sustainable structure that aligns with both aesthetic and manufacturing principles. The design needed to fall within the Caravan Act regulations and complement the agricultural surroundings. The cabin features a footprint of 9.6 by 4.3 meters, accommodating an open plan living room and kitchen, a double bedroom, and a bathroom. The use of reclaimed windows and doors was specified to enhance sustainability and add character to the building.
The Story Behind the Design
Drawing inspiration from The Bothy Project, which emphasises the creation of spaces that foster creativity, engagement with the landscape, and a simplified lifestyle, the Harbwr Cabin embodies these ideals. The design process prioritised a connection to the environment, using locally sourced, sustainably managed Douglas fir and larch for the structural insulated panels (SIPs). These were infilled with PIR insulation from seconds stock, ensuring an eco-friendly approach to building materials. The aesthetic goal was to integrate seamlessly with the agricultural setting, achieved through the use of Coroline corrugated cladding that mirrors the nearby barns.
The Construction Process: Realising the Vision
The construction of Harbwr Cabin was a testament to efficient and sustainable building practices. The cabin was designed, manufactured, and assembled by Makers Mark Joinery, with the main structure being erected swiftly on-site. The floor was completed in just one day, followed by the walls over two days, and the roof panels in a single day. The structure sits on saddle stone foundations, significantly reducing the need for cement and minimising environmental impact. The strategic material choices not only enhanced the cabin’s durability but also ensured it met the aesthetic and regulatory requirements of the project brief.
